Regardless of how people remember the First World War, and whether or not they romanticize the life of a soldier on the front lines, it is important that the world never forgets this brutal and bloody conflict.
The tumult and chaos that remained in the wake of the First World War had far-reaching and devastating consequences, not just for Europe and the survivors of the war, but for the entire world. The ruins of Europe provided a fertile breeding ground for fierce nationalism, which led to the rise of the Third Reich and allowed the evil of Adolf Hitler to go unchecked for far too long.

The First World War A Captivating Guide to World War 1 The Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Somme eBook Captivating History Reviews
- This is a really competent summary of a complex set of circumstances that made up what became known as WW1.
Also included are separate books on The Battle of Verdun and The Battle of the Somme which really just repeat what was revealed in the first book - albeit with more detail.
.....yet another truly mindless war that achieved nothing apart from the death of millions and untold destruction to achieve absolutely nothing!
One can only wonder at the decisions of the commanders (particularly the British) who constantly sent their men to almost certain death.
One can have a (reluctant) appreciation for the success of (basically) the Germans against so many other nations and to go close the winning. One could say the same about crazy Adolph - Germany (+ Italy!) against the world if they'd followed up after Dunkirk, and/or not invaded Russia, and/or not have been mindlessly distracted by the 'Final Solution' they would have easily won!
These book/s give a competent and detailed overview of this European war - but there is no information on what happened to those thousands of French (and other) villagers whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed, or the early effects of aircraft in warfare, or the impact from America becoming involved.
A skilled summary of vital war that impacted millions of people. - Full Disclosure I received an advance copy of this book so that I could submit an early review. However, I volunteered to do early reviews because I really like the model of the Captivating History series. The books are written on a wide variety of historical subjects. They are relatively short, but packed with information, so the reader can get a decent grasp of the subject without making a huge time commitment.
I was pretty impressed at how much detail they were able to include in a relatively short book. WWI, from its causes to the Treaty of Versailles is an expansive topic but they hit the important points very well. There is a good description of events leading up to the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand as well as descriptions of important battles and their significance. For those new to the topic, the book explains the details and horrors of life in the trenches and of the use of chemical weapons. It describes significant points on the western and eastern fronts, including the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the Russian Empire. For such a complex topic, the timelines of significant events and mini-bios of major players are also helpful.
World War I is a great, concise history of WWI, which puts the whole war in context. However, the other books, with their focus on a single, massive, and costly battle are able to dive deeper into the details of those battles and describe the incredible human cost of the war, as well as the small variables that can change history and turn the fortunes of war. I’d definitely read all three if you can. - It is amazing how people love war, myself included, but to actually read the horror associated with war not so amusing. As I read this it was so sad to see such a waste of young human life in this conflict. Whole communities were lost on body sides . There was no closure for thousands of families as their loved ones bodies were never accounted for.
This reading made it easy to switch back & forth on the two principal battles of WWI.
Explained in detail this should now be considered an expert analysis on battle tactics . The British introducing the use of tanks to be used in battle was a first .
Great read to be added to the literature of WWI.
Another good job as usual by the Captivating History staff. - The series is full of data concerning the Great War. But most of all, it abounds in the human drama the war meant to all those involved--civilian or military. That is what is so very good about the series. In the end, one understands what happened and why it happened. But one also sheds a tear for all the needless suffering and misery of the war. And, one can't help wondering how much stupidity humankind can be capable of!
- Great read, this is one of those reads that is about perfect for a trans-Atlantic flight. I truly love the war history from the Spanish-American war onwards, and this does a superb job summarizing WWI.
- Very informative book on the history of World War I. Definitely recommend.
- This is an interesting read. The WWI book gives you the general overview while the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme break down and explain in detail those two particular battles in much more detail. I highly recommend this book.
- Excellent read. Captivating from beginning to end.
